The Daisy Basket is my cozy, home-based crafts and gifts nook in Burleson, TX, where I spend my days designing handmade Whimsy t-shirts, beaded keychains, and other small treasures. No, I'm not as young as most new owners of a small business, therefore, I work in small batches on purpose, moving slowly through each step so I can enjoy and watch every print, bead, and ribbon fall into place with care. Each piece feels like a tiny celebration, meant to be worn, clipped to a bag, or tucked into a gift as a bright, whimsical surprise.

Most mornings begin in a quiet, cozy craft space for whimsy items: a worn table, soft piles of fabric, trays of beads catching the light, and my familiar tools lined up within reach. Although I'm NOT an actual designer of the DTF prints I use for my shirts, I do have certain standards I hold to when choosing every single design I print on my shirts for my customers and clients. Like you, I have those gentle memories nudge my heart as I painstakingly spend hours and hours shopping on LIVE DTF shows and browsing through my Vendors printed designs that speak to me through color palettes and imagine designs of how a t-shirt or keychain will feel in everyday life.

As the day moves along, I shift between making notes and thoughts about upcoming designs I want to look for, deciding on color combinations, laying out bead patterns, and pressing designs onto shirts or aprons. As mentioned, I keep the pace unhurried on purpose, letting each design breathe a little before I commit to the final press. That slow, steady rhythm has soothed a tender part of my heart, turning grief into something bright and handmade that carries memory, comfort, and a bit of playful whimsy forward.

From Inspiration To Completion: The Birth Of Whimsy Designs

Now, although NOT a 'designer' for most of my pieces I handmake, I will pull out a plain sketch pad and a soft pencil to maybe think of how to use a big piece that needs to be used in some special way. Most things, just come together as I do them. However, with the old family jewelry, I don't rush this part. I let my hand wander on the page, echoing curves from old brooches, tracing every line, adding tiny floral beads and clusters or the sweep of ribbon that framed a favorite photograph. For t-shirts, I think in terms of how a DTF transfer will sit across a chest or shoulder, how it will move when someone laughs or reaches for a hug. I won't deny that there's a little 'sarcasm' thrown in here and there, but I wouldn't be a southern gal without it.

As I've said, I'm not the actual DTS designer. I don't have the high dollar machines to make my own designs and prints. However, I will say, I have browsed, watched and spent time and money looking for the perfect few Vendors that carry family friends, beautiful, funny and practical DTF transfers that I now use in my business to reflect who I am. So much so that each Vendor almost knows before I claim something, that DAISY DAWN will be choosing that one (1) DTF transfer.

I also have found a few T-shirt Vendors I use for that perfect DTF transfer before I post to my website. For the most part, I choose a 50/50 blend of a unisex crew shirt for my tees. I'm not a warehouse, so I can't stock every color of every style. Yet, my Vendors can get me what I need for a custom order within days. So, that's very helpful. Some prefer V-neck, some like a lighter shade of a certain color. Most of my items are premade. But, for the occasional custom printed shirt, these options are obviously available.

Preparing for DTF printing feels a bit like setting a table. I lift up the press lid, checking line thickness, color edges, and how the image rests within the printable space. I adjust the size so the design sits comfortably on a chest, not too high, not lost near the hem. Once the layout looks right, I lay the thermal protective layer over the shirt and let the press do the rest.

When ready to make the shirt, I like to pre-press it for a few seconds. This removes any moisture and it smooths out the weave of the fabric. It's now ready to be pressed. I lay the print on the shirt, ink down, then put a protective liner over it. When completed and peeled, I hold the cooled product up to inspect every edge and detail, every flower, leaf, letter, splatter, etc. Once I know it's good to go, I lay it down once more to spray a protective spray on the print to completely adhere and protect it for a long life washing after washing.

When I close the press, I listen for the steady tick of the timer and let those seconds be still. The controlled heat lets the shirt cool until it feels just slightly warm, then peel the film back in a slow, even motion, watching the design reveal itself on the fabric.

Because I work in small batches, each Whimzy t-shirts stays close at hand from start to finish. I stack the finished pieces in short piles, not more than a few at a time, so I can compare color tones and placement side by side. They now have the DIY selections that takes the decisions of which beads look good together, out of the equation. GREAT IDEA!!!

Once hardware is in place, I add a last securing step: a drop of clear-drying adhesive in the knot, a carefully pressed crimp bead, or a tiny stitched wrap. I let this cure fully before trimming any extra cord. Rushing this part risks fraying; patience here means the keychain can handle backpacks, purses, or a busy key ring.

Before I set a finished keychain aside, I hold it like someone would day to day. I check how it dangles from a finger, whether beads twist smoothly, and if any edge feels sharp. I look at it beside a printed t-shirt laid nearby and notice the contrast: one born from software, film, and heat, the other from quiet threading, knots, and metal rings. Both carry the same gentle whimsy, but the beaded piece keeps more of the hand's imprint-small irregularities in spacing, a favorite charm tucked just off-center, the slight give of cord.
